Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
Before a man’s sperm fertilizes a woman’s egg, the sperm’s head must adhere to the egg’s surface. Once connected, the sperm pushes through the egg’s outer layer to the interior (cytoplasm), where fertilization occurs.
For a number of reasons, sperm cannot always reach the outer layer. The outer layer of the egg may be thick or difficult to penetrate, or the sperm may be unable to swim. In such cases, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) can be used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization (IVF) to help fertilize the egg. Where a single sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm of the egg during ICSI.
Please keep in mind that infertility may impact anybody, and while it can be a difficult experience, the good news is that our doctors can help you explore the choices available to fulfill your desire of having a baby.
