MACS – Magnetic Activated Cell Sorting

This technique permits the best sperm to be picked for fertilization of an egg so that it develops into a healthy embryo treatment, improving the chances of a successful pregnancy.

All sperms have a finite lifespan and perish through a process known as Apoptosis. There are sperms at varying stages of apoptosis in a particular sample, and if an egg is fertilized by apoptotic spermatozoa, the embryo will most likely not develop and will result in miscarriage. However, using this MACS approach, apoptotic spermatozoa are kept in the magnetic field while surviving spermatozoa pass, which is subsequently employed for infertility therapy such as IUI, IVF, and ICSI.

Who is offered this treatment?

This technique is used in patients with mainly:

  • In patients who have had at least previous treatment cycle failures due to poor embryo quality which is not attributable to the oocyte patients being treated with.
  • Infertile couples with a male partner have sperm with a significant amount of DNA fragmentation.
  • Patients undergoing artificial insemination treatment.
  • Patients who have experienced many miscarriages due to an unknown reason.
